When should we bring our troops home from Iraq Essay

When should we bring our soldiers home from Iraq - Essay Example On nineteenth September 2005, in a joint public interview with then President George Bush, Jalal Talabani, the occupant and sixth President of Iraq, was cited saying that, â€Å"We will set no plan for withdrawal, Mr. President.A schedule will enable the fear based oppressors, to will energize them that they could crush the superpower of the world and the Iraqi people† (GOLIATH, 2005). 6 years, 455 Bn dollars and more than 4421 military passings later (Congressional Research Service, 2010), Mr. Talabani’s words on ‘timetable’ still remain constant with the current 50,000 US military boots on the grounds of Iraq. Since its initiation, Iraq war has been exposed to discusses beginning right from the defense of war, official and informal causes, outside and country open help, and troops withdrawal. Despite the fact that a semi withdrawal cutoff time was set by the status of drives understanding away from Iraq by 31 December 2011 (Congressional Research Service, 2009), yet the real factors behind the genuine troop withdrawal are as yet soft as depicted by Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates on April seventh 2011 (BBC News, 2011). The issue of troops withdrawal isn't only an issue of date however is a tangled circumstance of geopolitics, business (read oil), remote and philanthropic strategy objectives, uprisings, adjustment and manageability. It is beneficial to note or consider on whether the soldiers should come back from Iraq today, tomorrow or ought to have done it yesterday. America and Iraq †Looking back at recent years The Republic of Iraq, when a safe house to the soonest human advancements (Mesopotamia) on the planet, turned into a grieved shadow of its past with multi-ethnic conflicts and brutality, savage tyrannies, strict prejudices and devotion, social and financial partitions and a rich save of â€Å"black gold†. On twentieth March 2003, President Bush announced war against Iraq as American powers connected the cen ter east country from its southern fringe. Preceding the declaration, US had accumulated global help and collusions with UK, Australia, Canada and Netherlands to battle Iraq. Reasons of battle interruption of US associated powers in this Arab nation have been easy to refute since the war began. The official defense of Operation Iraqi Freedom (official name of Iraq war) introduced by US to the UN Security Council and by President Bush in his State of Union Address as (1) to obliterate Saddam Hussain's (Reigning radical tyrant of Iraq) weapons of mass demolition (WMD); (2) to dispose of the danger of worldwide psychological warfare; and (3) to advance popular government in Iraq and encompassing regions (CNN, 2003). In coming years, these reasons would turn into the focal point of wild discussion and an obligation for the Bush Administration to safeguard both to America and the remainder of the world. Informal reasons why America was hauled into the inside stage in Arab world are hypot hesized to be (1) to control the oil stores of Iraq, Israel-US relations (Perezalonso, 2006) and to offer an American expression of impact in the Middle east. Regardless of whether the war was legitimized or not, America was in disorganized and crisis circumstance. Iraq saw Saddam Hussain’s catch in 2003, Evidence of American military personnel’s misuse and torment of detainees in 2004, First Iraqi political decision in 2005, Saddam’s execution in 2005, Insurgency in 2007 and Stabilization endeavors since 2008. The absolute expense of war was evaluated to be 3 Trillion dollars (Washington Post, 2010). Aside from anticipated causalities and monetary misfortune, the significant outcomes of the Iraq war have been (1) Deconstruction of Iraq (2) Possible radical strengthening of in Middle East and (3) US Hegemony in danger (Hinnebusch, 2007). The war was likewise a significant reason for banter in US Elections 2008 and was one of the variables that prompted choose of President Barack Obama. Would it be a good idea for us to bring our soldiers back home? Since the time, Bush Administration conceded that misrepresentation of Iraq’s ownership of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) contention (Usborne, 2003), open

Karen Horney: Her Life and Work Essay -- Feminine Psychology Essays

Karen Horney: Her Life and Work Karen Horney, a psychoanalyst maybe most popular for her thoughts with respect to female brain research, confronted a lot of analysis from standard Freudian psychoanalysts during her time. Robert Sternberg said that imagination is consistently a â€Å"person-framework interaction† in light of the fact that numerous profoundly inventive people produce items that are acceptable, yet that are not actually what others expect or want. Subsequently, imagination is just important with regards to the framework that makes a decision about it. In the event that this is valid, I accept that Karen Horney made genuinely innovative commitments to the field of brain research, and especially to the space of therapy. She disrupted guidelines in a space that was itself genuinely new, and in doing so introduced thoughts that have been being used right up 'til the present time. She did as such in a framework that shelled her with a decent lot of analysis since her thoughts were not quite the same as those that Freud and his pupils bolstered. Be that as it may, she made her imprint as an ace in her area and has figured out how to have some of her thoughts consolidated into conscience brain science, frameworks hypothesis, and various self-completing schools of psychotherapy. Howard Gardner has considered numerous imaginative experts inside the setting of his hypothesis of the three center components of inventiveness. These incorporate the connection between the kid and the grown-up maker, the connection between the maker and others, and the connection between the maker and their work. Karen Horney’s youth and grown-up life have been reflected in quite a bit of her work. She was conceived in 1885, the finish of the Victorian time. Horney’s father was a â€Å"God-dreading fundamentalist who firmly accepted that ladies were sub-par compared to men and were the wellspring of all abhorrence in the world† (Hergenhahn and Olson... ...usly molded her character and later impacted her psychoanalytic hypothesis. Thus, her character influenced her relations with others in her area, her family, her companions, her faultfinders, and her supporters. It permitted her to acquire and hold unmistakable situations in brain research and to support endless patients. Horney invested wholeheartedly in her work; she wouldn't permit conventional Freudian teaching and its supporters to keep her from voicing the speculations that she painstakingly developed from long stretches of individual reflection incorporated with perceptions of cultural impact. Cloning Essays (464 words) - Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cloning

Cloning Essays (464 words) - Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cloning Cloning The new forward leap of cloning is an incredible development in biotechnology. The utilization of cloning can be both valuable and hurtful to society. There are numerous sensible approaches to utilize the techniques for cloning. For example, the utilization for clinical purposes can be useful in cases for example, creating creatures with human body frameworks that could be utilized for transplanting organs. It very well may be a significant resource for our general public in that manner. It very well may be destructive in the event that it is opened for use in the overall population since it could cause numerous issues if an inappropriate individuals become associated with it. As expressed in Times Magazine, this is an achievement in innovation and it is unthinkable for the administration to preclude anybody to not utilize cloning. It is another law of nature that is being opposed and the legislature can't remove that. In the field of medication, cloning can be a helpful method. It isn't just barely having the option to duplicate the qualities, yet to have the option to move them and to examine them. It would be conceivable to consider organs of the human body to figure out how they can adjust them to cause them to recover after injury. Additionally, the methods of replicating qualities and duplicating DNA could help in discovering solutions for specific infections and disarranges. Researchers can take DNA from solid cells and duplicate it at that point infuse it into an undesirable cell to offset the ?terrible? qualities. I don't concur with the utilization of cloning for human reason with the goal for guardians to ?pick? their youngster. In the first place, by repeating attributes that guardians want would foul up the decent variety of society. In the event that everybody had the option to pick what qualities their youngster would have, a great many people would pick the attributes of celebrated individuals who are either very savvy or who are inconceivably attractive. The age of the ?clone individuals? would be so comparative in perspectives and in character what's more, the world would turn into an exhausting spot, if that were the situation. Other than the world getting exhausting, there are different components to consider. The replication and duplicating of DNA can now and then reason harm to the hereditary code. For this situation, it is workable for hereditary disarranges emerge. In the event that an example of DNA is taken from a more youthful individual to duplicate, that individual could be conveying a code for a type of confusion whose manifestations would not appear until some other time in the person?s life. In this way, the specific code that would be replicated to make another human conveys that scatter. I think the new advancement is fascinating and has numerous unanswered questions.. There are numerous things that should be sifted through, for example, who can utilize cloning what's more, how it will be controlled so it doesn't cause issues. It is horrendous to see such an extraordinary advancement be mishandled by an inappropriate people.

Many have looked to Salem for instance of craziness, in which they had encountered a gigantic aggregate frenzy that moved through the city, as their chase for witches turned into an incomprehensibly important issue. For what reason did a kept Puritan culture rapidly for the time being tr ansform into the hustle for finding, and making allegations of witches? One needed to think about what the human creative mind benefited from that could rouse neighbors and old companions develop for the time being as rages furtively twisted on the torment and the pulverization of Christians (Miller, 3). In the Crucible, agitation is most plainly found in the townspeople nonsensical acknowledgment of the young ladies created cases of black magic. As a great many people in the city had encountered black magic firsthand their psyches had revealed to them that it was in reality occurring and for them to rapidly freeze in the situation of last chance. Presently returning to what Arthur Miller had stated, I accept that our minds are benefited from the unavoidable truth or passing. In a particular situation, where it was your life and notoriety on the line per state and your neighbors life on the line, OK either make a case to make your neighbor look blameworthy, or would you not? Numerous individuals were blamed for black magic on account of delirium, and as I said madness is additionally mental sickness. I accept that their psyches had continued advising them to escape the circumstance and for them to spare themselves, as opposed to keep themselves in the risky frenzy of the preliminarie s.

Structure and Styleâ€The Canvas and the Paint

by Ryan Weins    Hello there! I’m new here—to IEW, and especially to blogging. So here’s to the first one! When I was hired, Julie told me, â€Å"You can play the ‘new guy card’ for your first year.† However, that doesn’t apply with regard to the blog, so I get to take on the same â€Å"blank page† veteran IEW’ers are so accustomed to conquering. I’m excited to expand on the idea behind everything we do here: Structure and Styleâ„ ¢. It’s changing my life. I see it everywhere. Look around you. Everything around us is based on this union. Nature, sports, relationships—they’re are all operating with structure and style. And as I look deeper at the pairing of these two words, it occurs to me again and again that even though structure and style are equally important, mastery may develop at a different rate. Structure is the canvas upon which style is applied. As a basketball coach, I get to teach this structure and style lesson to athletes all the time. â€Å"It isn’t what you do, but how you do it that matters most.† To play the game, structure is perfected with techniques of efficient shooting, passing, dribbling, and defense. All of us learn these things, following the same structure (i.e., the rule book), but each player fits them together differently to discover his or her own stylistic advantage. A talented basketball player is poetry in motion. His style pops out of the canvas of the structure of the game. Andrew Pudewa has said, â€Å"What I want more than anything is for [people] to be equipped to speak and write and think and communicate the truth—in a world that seems increasingly in need of truth.† This is why we (IEW) teach the structure, providing the tools for good thinking and equipping students with a toolbox of style, which allows them to create their own unique style in which to shine. In the end we’re all teachers to someone, and that’s a big deal. It’s our responsibility that when the time comes to share truth with people, we’ve structured our lives in advance so we may communicate in a style which will inspire and move their hearts to greater understanding. But, you can’t be anything more than yourself, so enjoy the journey of structuring life for success and find your style. It’s artistry in motion. And remember, â€Å"Who you are is precisely who someone needs.† You’ve got this!    Ryan Weins is an Oklahoma native who enjoys personal interactions with people, adventures with his family, a wide range of music, and all things athletic. He has served as a basketball coach at a local high school for five years and enjoys helping people reach their fullest potential through growth in communication and motivation. With that goal in mind, Ryan is delighted to assist IEW in serving teachers and teaching parents, asserting that "the most transformational belief one can hold is the simple yet often unrecognized knowledge that you are worth it—worth the time, worth the effort, worth the love, worth the sacrifice." He strives to communicate that belief to every IEW customer he serves.

Thematic Analysis Data Driven Inductive And Sociological...

3. Data analysis Thematic analysis is applied to process the data from semi-structured interviews and policy documents. Thematic analysis is an encoding qualitative information process, involving discovering, interpreting and reporting themes within data (Boyatzis, 1998, Spencer et al., 2014). Braun and Clarke (2006) propose decisions of ‘inductive or deductive’, ‘semantic or interpretative’, and ‘realist or constructionist’ for applying thematic analysis methods. This thesis applies the data-driven inductive approach, which explores the model of home care in urban China to refine the ‘marketisation of care’ theory. I investigate the underlying and theorized idea at the interpretative level, while considering the sociocultural and structural contexts from the constructionist perspective. Referring to practical steps, this study follows the classical approach proposed by Zang and Wildemuth (2009): collecting data; defining the unit of analysis; making a coding scheme; testing the coding scheme on a sample of text; coding all text. I repeatedly read and thematically code the verbatim transcripts in Chinese, through which QSR Nvivo will be used to facilitate analysis. Through the process, I code themes, categories, and sub-categories transparently, coherently, and consistently. The case study approach includes three analysis levels, namely interpretational, structural, and reflective (Creswell, 2014; Tichapondwa, 2013). This study analyses data for themes, categories andShow MoreRelatedManaging Tensions Inherent Of Business6389 Words   |  26 PagesManaging Tensions Inherent in Business (For-profit) and Social (Non-profit) Entrepreneurial Activities Introduction Over the past several decades, entrepreneurship has attracted considerable attention of scholars from various disciplines. Feminist Issues in The Handmaids Tale Essay - 1316 Words

Feminist Issues in The Handmaids Tale The Handmaids Tale, by Margaret Atwood, can be classified as a distopic novel. The Republic of Gilead in The Handmaids Tale is characteristic of a distopia in that it is not intended as a prediction of the future of our society, but rather as a commentary on current social trends. Atwood has created this nation by isolating what she might consider the disturbing aspects of two diametrically opposed factions of our society (namely the religious right and radical feminism) as a theory as to what would happen if these ideals were taken to an extreme. Because she points out similarities in the thoughts and actions of the extreme religious right and certain parts of the feminist movement,†¦show more content†¦This can be seen as an attempt to point out the neo-Victorian aspects of most anti-pornography ideologies. In past times, especially the Victorian era, the idea of protecting women from the varies dangers of society and exploitation has been used as an excuse to keep women f rom working outside of the home, voting, or participating in many other social and political activities. Even today many Islamic women will state that their veils and extremely modest dress are a form of protection from sexual exploitation. Atwood could be trying to show us that although pornography is degrading to women, this is an issue that is far outweighed by the greater issue of freedom of speech or expression, which goes against the many opinions from both the religious right and some extreme feminists. Another issue in which feminist and religious movements can be seen to converge in this novel is in the process of childbirth. To understand why this is significant a short history of childbirth is necessary. In early times all births were natural due to the fact that there were not any alternatives. Even after anesthetics had been regularly used for many medical procedures, however, childbirth was still not considered a situation that required pain relief techniques. This was partially due to the fact that until recently most births were attended by midwives or other women rather than by physicians and were not consideredShow MoreRelatedThe Characters of Women in The Handmaids Tale and The Bell Jar1504 Words   |  7 Pages Women in The Handmaids Tale and The Bell Jar nbsp; Sylvia Plaths renowned autobiographical legend The Bell Jar and Margaret Atwoods fictional masterpiece The handmaids tale are the two emotional feminist stories, which basically involve the womens struggle. When Beowulf was written, St. Augustine had just come over to try and convert the Anglo-Saxon people to Christianity; although the conversion succeeded it was a shallow conversion, and there were still people following the Pagan ways. The fact that Christianity and Paganism are so closely combined in†¦show more content†¦In their battle, Beowulf’s sword is useless against the tough skin of Grendel’s mother. He seizes a sword hanging on the wall that was forged by giants too heavy for any normal human to hold and slashes th rough the monster’s tough body (61-2). Beowulf’s superhuman strength is even more undeniable when he tells of his swimming match at sea with Breca. They each swam in icy waters for five days and five nights carrying swords to fight off the sea monsters. When Beowulf found himself pulled underwater by a monster, he killed it and eight other sea beasts that came to attack him (42-4). These pagan influences of amazing superhuman strength are not only apparent in Beowulf, but in many of the monsters he confronts on his journey. Another pagan influence is instilled. The hilt of the sword found in the deeps is described as twisted and ornamented with snakes and made by giants and supernatural beings. In many pagan religions and believes, animals were worshiped as gods. Beowulf seems afraid of defeat and failure. His boastful remarks are reminders to himself of his invincibility. In this poem, the poet is both critical and praising of the Anglo-Saxons’ beliefs and cust oms. Grendel, as well as his mother, has no knowledge of weapons so he depends on his extraordinary strength to destroy his enemies. He devours men whole leaving almost no trace of blood or destruction except for the door he

Essay on Treason in the Eye of the Beholder - 1184 Words

There is a fine line between treason and revolution, however when the two come up it very likely that the individual that is being of accused of either can go from one or the other in the blink of an eye. During the late 1700’s America was going through some of the most difficult times of its history. The struggle with Britain was becoming harder and those within the colonies were unsure what direction they wanted to take the colonies. Thomas Paine however knew exactly what direction he felt the colonies should go and that was to break away from Britain and become an independent nation from Britain all together. There was a crisis in America with no set rules or regulations to guide those that were living within its borders and Paine†¦show more content†¦He saw chaos and confusion and of course wanted to understand why those that were already pushing back against Britain were not doing more. Paine was already acquainted with many influential leaders of that day w ho would help establish the beginnings of our constitution. Men like Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Charles Peale. However, Paine wanted more than just break away. Paine stated. â€Å"Society was a positive phenomenon, government a negative one: Society is produced by our wants and government by our wickedness†. Paine was aware that the British government was attempting to crush the spirit of the colonies, nevertheless you realized that the colonies needed to form a government of its own to stand on their own in order to break away. Thomas Paine was successful in what he penned down in Common Sense. In one of his statements from his pamphlet, the Revolutionary War is spelled out in black in white and from what we know now it to place one a few months after these pamphlets were printed. Paine stated, â€Å"all subjection to Britain ought to have ceased; and the independence of America should have been considered as dating its era from, and published by, the first musket fired at her†. Paine understood and he wanted the American colonist to understand that they need to fight for their independents against Britain. Google vs Microsoft Free Essays

In today’s society many people are using the internet more and more to shop online, handle business transactions and surf the web for what interests them. Microsoft and Google are known to many people as internet giants. The two companies compete for business in the internet world by offering similar online business services. We will write a custom essay sample on Google vs Microsoft or any similar topic only for you Order Now Microsoft also offers an array of computer products to consumers and businesses such as Windows 7, Microsoft office and MSN. Google’s main focus of business is its search engine that many people use today to surf the internet. This paper will compare and contrast Microsoft’s and Google’s business model, financial management system and explain which company could better withstand a major recession and at the same time, compare their financial ratios and decide which two companies that would be better to invest in. Microsoft was started in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen who developed an interpreter for basics programming language systems that has contributed to Microsoft’s being so successful. Microsoft is one of the largest technology companies in the world which specializes in developing and licensing computer software products such as Windows 7, Microsoft office, MSN and Bing. Microsoft’s management team is led by chief executive officer Steve Ballmer who also serves on the executive board, chairman Bill Gates, seven directors, and one chief financial officer which are all non-executive board members. The company has been known for its leadership style through its founder Bill Gates for donating money to many charities and helping the poor. Microsoft is also said to be an innovator for the new-age workplace where work is made to be comfortable, fun and inspiring so that all employees can enjoy doing their work and like to spend their time there as well. Bill Gates did not even finish college but his work ethics are being taught in schools through the world. Microsoft has an excellent track record for innovation because it keep coming up with new technology and devices every year (Datamonitor, a, 2011). On the other hand, Microsoft is in competition with Google and other internet companies over the use of internet search engines. Google was founded in 1998 by two Stanford University graduate students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Google is an international technology firm that is concentrated on improving the way people get their information from the internet. Google has three core businesses search, advertisements, and applications. The search engine powered by Google provides information for millions of users every day. It must be determined that information reported to the Google search engine is beneficial to the user; a set of criteria has been developed to serve this purpose. A common method of determining the usefulness of the page for the user is searching the document for keywords. Keywords must be entered to search on Google, and the documents are scanned to determine how often they appear. The more keywords a document has tends to indicate its usefulness to the user. Another evaluating principle for reporting useful pages is the ranking for the page and quality of the site. Websites receive rankings which reflect quality, relevance, and accuracy. Websites who have high rankings and numerous keywords are reported to the user first. This method of obtaining information allows the user to access vital information in a matter of seconds. Search advertisements are used to further assist users, and to offer Google’s main products and services and provide valuable and relevant information for people who use the search engines for answers they seek. Google search engine is like Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Google also sells their product and services in more than 100 languages throughout the world. Google’s management team is led by a chairman Eric Schmidt, a chief executive Larry Page, a director of special projects Sergey Brin which are all executive board members. They also have six directors that are non-executive board members. The company is a leader in that they provide people with valuable information. At the same time, however, Google is a slow innovator in its search engine technology. For example, its search engine has not shown major innovation despite the quality of Google’s searching technology that is absolutely dominating. However, as search engine technology advanced in the past decade the technological gap between Google and Microsoft has decreased more and more as we see with Bing (Datamonitor, b, 2011). On the other hand, by using the financial ratio I believe that Microsoft would benefit more and be able to survive a major economic recession. Microsoft has five divisions within their organization such as Windows Windows 7, Microsoft business, online services, server and tools, entertainment and devices. According to Datamonitor, a , â€Å"The company’s product under this division include Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint; Microsoft Exchange Server; and Microsoft Dynamics ERP and CRM as well as Microsoft Office Web Apps, which are the online companions to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote† (2011, p. ). This shows that Microsoft has many divisions and products that they can offer to consumers, businesses and investors. This also shows that Microsoft would be better suited to withstand a major recession due to the many products they have to offer unlike Google which only has search engines and advertising to depend on. Therefore as seen in the financial ratio Google has not made any money nor did it lose any money. Microsoft on the other hand, has made money due to the many products it has to offer. Subsequently, the profitability ratio can tell us a lot about Microsoft and Google performance. The profitability ratio can tell us what each company’s revenue and losses were for the year. It can also tell us about both companies operating budget, debts, stocks, and investments. According to Microsoft’s annual report, â€Å"Windows Division revenue reflected relative performance in PC market segments. We estimated that sales of PC’s to businesses grew approximately 11% this year and sales of PC’s to consumers declined approximately 1%† (2011, p. 50). This demonstrates that by using the profitability ratio Microsoft was able to calculate their gains and losses for the year in the sale of PC’s. This also shows that by using the profitability ratio Microsoft was able to project their sales of PC’s to other businesses. Therefore if someone wanted to invest company like Microsoft they should use the profitability ratio to determine a company’s return on assets and equity to see if it is a good investment. As we can see PC’s sales to businesses grew 11% while consumers PC’s sales weakened by 1% so an investor should put their money in business PC’s. After seeing the profitability ratio of both companies Microsoft would be the company to invest in because they payout more money and make more money per share and to each stockholder. One can agree that Microsoft has done well over the years by them recognizing and using the knowledge base and technological base has been an asset for the company. Microsoft is one of the best companies when it comes to software and programming. Microsoft over the years has realized that their competitors can have an impact on market changes and with this knowledge it has allowed Microsoft to make the required decisions in the market place. The issues and concerns that Microsoft and other organizations face are technology changes and competition. Technology today has surpassed the technology of yesterday. Yet, Microsoft has shown that they can meet these challenges in various areas by meeting these issues and concerns head on. Microsoft oftentimes has restructured some of their well-known operating systems, programs and software to keep up with the changing times. Recently, they have launched Bing and Windows 7. According to Microsoft annual report: Online Services Division (OSD) develops and markets information and content designed to help people simplify tasks and make more informed decisions online, and that help advertisers connect with audiences. OSD offerings include Bing, MSN ad Center, and advertiser tools. Bing and MSN generate revenue through the sale of search and display advertising generally accounts for nearly all of OSD’s annual revenue. (2011, p. 54) This demonstrates that Microsoft would be a great company to invest in because they offer many different products that makes a lot of money. This also demonstrates that Microsoft has seen an increase in revenue due to the fact that they invested in Bing and MSN. Therefore one should also consider the return on current ratio and the dividend payout ratio before making a decision on investing in the company. On the other hand one should also look at the investment valuation before making an investment decision. Investors need to be aware that before they invest in a company such as Microsoft that the likelihood of the problems when it comes to investing occur with large corporations where there is a higher degree of the separation of ownership and management, and thus perhaps an occurrence of a conflict of the goals of the managers and the goals of the shareholders. Aside from doing research on the company itself, doing an evaluation of stock can also prove to be useful. Knowing if stock is overpriced can tip you off, in that you then need to find out why it is overpriced. For example, is the stock overpriced because investors sincerely believe that the stock is good and has potential, or is the stock price high because of current economic conditions. Knowing the answer to such questions will help individuals as investors make better and more informed decisions. According to Google’s annual report: Strategic, financial and execution isks and exposures associated with our business strategy, product innovation and sales road map policy matters, significant litigation and regulatory exposures, and other current matters that may present material risk to our financial performance, operations, infrastructure, plans, prospects or reputation, acquisition and divestitures. (2011, p. 16) This explains that investing in large corporations can be ris ky and, this also explains that you should look, at a company’s investment valuation before investing. The reason why this is so important is because people can lose their money and if they did their homework by using the investment valuation they would see where their money is going and if they are making a wise decision when they invest into a company. In conclusion, Google and Microsoft’s are the world’s most powerful technology organizations that have proven it is possible to excel in the corporate world. The software and programming that Microsoft’s sells is the same product that has proven to be a useful tool for the company. Allocating costs and investing in new technology and recognizing competition including recognizing revenues gain and loss has also proven to be an asset for Microsoft. Google and Microsoft recognize and realize the potential of technology in the ever changing world of business. Google and Microsoft have met the challenges and changes of today’s society. As for Microsoft achieving its goals, the belief is that it has surpassed those goals and is constantly revising technology and products to meet them and new ones in a timely manner. Therefore, making it a company that investors want to invest in. Microsoft, financial aspects has allowed me to decide that it is one of the best companies, to invest in today. While Google on the other hand, must find better innovative techniques so it can gain more capital so that investors want to invest in the company. At the same time Google must keep up with other competitors such as Microsoft so that the company does not be left behind in the future from other competitors stealing their clients. Cyber Security And Technology Free Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Cyber Security And Technology. Answer: Introduction The concept of cyber security is relatively new in business and since it is related to technological development where companies are now clearly see and observe the importance of protecting the data and how one can completely ignore any act based on security infringements (Bell et al., 2015). Concept of cyber security can be defined as a wrong or unethical work to gain access to the private information that an organization denies discussing with consumers. The major significance of the topic is based on how technology continues to evolve with the different opportunities and challenges. Our aim is to provide an informative primer on the different relevant issues facing Australia. Along with this, the discussion is also to generate the discussions about the debate and then raise awareness with regards to the fundamental block of the technologically dependent society. In the current time, there are number of examples that are eye-opening and have also struck the consumers to think again and consider the decision about sharing sensitive resources of information on the internet (Von Solms et al., 2013). The work is based on the research of how the cyber security has been proved to be the major challenge for the different organizations with the focus on the different questionnaires and the surveys from the people in Australia. Project Objective The focus of the project is to have a complete knowledge of what people think about the cyber security and what precautions they have taken to secure their data. The challenge of cyber security in companies like Apple, Microsoft and Google, is important to hover as many hackers try to plunge into the system of the companies through phishing, hacking etc., and try to grab the data of the system. My project objective is related to the research work that comes from evaluating the different questions about the cyber security challenges for the business. The aim is to understand the consequences of leakage of data and demands in the form of ransom. Project Scope To grasp various angles of the issues, it is important to refer different research paper and journals on the internet. My project demonstrates the dimensions from the business perspectives where the focus is based on achieving the deep knowledge about the cyber challenges. The data that I have collected is from the various sources like the conducting surveys and interviewing businessmens, books, research papers and from the internet. The literature review is also included to depict about the cyber security and it answers the questions related to the challenges. My project guides are mainly to understand the different risks of the cyber security and the issues related to it. The work is mainly demonstrating the methods that could be used for preventing the cyber threats in the organization. Literature Review Businesses these days are under constant assault from criminal working against them on internet which is also known as cyber criminals resulting in the rise of overall cost for the companies. It has been seen that for the big companies like Google, there is an increase in prevalence and the severity of the malicious cyber enabled activities and other extraordinary threats that are done to the national security, foreign policy and economy. One of the damaging targets are for the society embroiled cyberwarfare infrastructure. Here, the focus is on the single points of failure which is directed to the power stations, communication network, transport and the other utilities. In the year 2015, there were many corporate law firms in New York that were attack of cybercrime (Born, 2015). There were three hackers from China that have got an opportunity to enter into firms computer system by playing a trick n partners and revealing the passwords of their emails. After entering the accounts, th ese criminals got their hands on very sensitive and confidential information about some future mergers. These criminals than traded the information and earned more than four million dollars. Like many other victims these firms preferred to stay quiet about being part of victims (Cavelty, 2014). They also feared catching attention of other thugs as well as also damaging the reputation since they were the keepers of the secrets of clients. But some information leaked in media and then was later confirmed by the federal prosecutors and those firms as well (Hong et al., 2014). The federal court publicly discussed the discoveries and their efforts to bring the alleged criminals to justice. The case of cyber-attack meets the security fraud must serve as wake up call for much law based companies. It is important to understand for such companies that they will be the target of cyber-attacks since the information is valuable for the criminals (Overbye et al., 2017). The ransom ware like Wan naCry attack single handedly has crippled so many computers in more one hundred and fifty countries in May and it can cost companies more than four billion dollars as per so many estimates. It is slowly dawning on so many corporate level hackings based victims associated with some vulnerable as well as completely defenseless situations (Wells et al., 2014). The case of cybercrime is also metalizing for the similar face that are present on online services and have become very popular with customers and businesses at the same time (Bates et al., 2015). The internet network was established for the overall convenience and profit of the users is now exposing the world new kinds of threats. Research Questions/Hypothesis Primary Question What are some of the factors that influence the system of the cyber security with the setup of the business organization? Secondary Questions What are some of the approaches which could be used for protecting the system of the organizations from any kind of cyber-attacks? How cyber security planning and the issues can handle the challenges of the safety and privacy? Research Gap The research gaps are related to the business organization which are cyberspace and the cyber-criminal activities that affect the business. The design faults are mainly in the web applications which is the major issue of the cyber security. The design faults are due to the web applications, with accessing the data and manipulating and misusing it. The issues are related to the internal business process that affect the capacity to implement and sustain the cyber security. Moreover, from surveys, cyber security software is too expensive for the small businesses so people usually stop considering to buy them. Research Design and Methodology: Qualitative research The qualitative research is mainly based on exploratory related research and used to gain knowledge of so many underlying facts, views as well as motivations. It also provided various kinds of insights into the issues that have helped to develop concepts as well as hypothesis for number of quantitative research (Kwon et al., 2013). Here the project will use qualitative research is uncover various trends through opinions of people and dive deeper in the issue. The method will be used in a form of semi structured tools and techniques (Bates et al., 2015). Some of most common methods also include the focus group discussion, interviews and observations. The sample size for the research will be small and selected incidences which were highly controversial by nature. Quantitative research Quantitative research has been done quantify the issue in a way of creating number of data that can be modified into used statistics. I have worked on the elements which includes the secured versions depending upon the views of the different elements. The research is mainly for the classification of the features, construction of the statistical models to explain about what has been observed. I have focused on the other tools like the questionnaires or the equipment for collecting the numerical data. The data is more efficient that has been done with establishing the facts depending upon the forms of surveys like questionnaire via email, face to face interview from the support manager who has faced the cybersecurity challenges, mobile surveys and many more. Research Limitations I have seen that there are some of the limitations: The sample size is smaller with 6 participants, where the bigger sample would improve the research reliability. The research is not based on the measurements with the examination of the problems. There are cases where some of the participants tend to refuse against the organization. Time Schedule Conclusion The internet in current time is permitting the business of all kind to reach new and large market places and create opportunities to work in an efficient manner by utilizing computer related tools (Wells et al., 2014). A company must be thinking to adapt cloud computing or just use email and maintain a website with cyber security must become an integral part of the plan. Theft of information has become a common kind of fraud then surpassing the theft in physical form. Every business that uses internet for work is accountable for creating a strong base related to culture of security that will increase the business as well as confidence of consumers. Relaxer Alt-J free essay sample

Alt-J, an English band whose genre seeps into almost everything, from electro-pop, to rock, to folk, and everything in between, released their third album, â€Å"Relaxer,† this summer. Three tracks were released as singles before the album: â€Å"3WW,† â€Å"In Cold Blood,† and â€Å"Adeline.† These were pretty good and generated hype for the release of the album. Unfortunately, that’s when we learned that the singles are the best songs on â€Å"Relaxer.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"Pleader† takes half of its allotted length to get to the singing, which I normally wouldn’t mind if the first half of the song was interesting. Instead the song is boring and tedious. If I have to sit through two-and-a-half minutes to get to the good part of a song, I’m not going to listen to it often.â€Å"Hit Me Like That Snare† isn’t boring, but it’s also not good. It’s the most different on this album, but that’s not always a good thing. We will write a custom essay sample on Relaxer Alt-J or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The fact that â€Å"Relaxer† is only eight tracks doesn’t leave much room for mistakes. Although six of the songs feature strings performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra, there isn’t a real cohesive sound to the collection; I would have liked at least two more songs in order to tie in some sort of creative theme. This album wasn’t more of the same Alt-J that we knew, but it’s not completely new either. â€Å"In Cold Blood† is similar to â€Å"Left Hand Free† (from the group’s second album) in structure and sound, and â€Å"Adeline† is very similar to some of the slower songs on their first album, â€Å"An Awesome Wave.†Overall, â€Å"Relaxer† is a solid 6 out of 10, in my opinion. It’s some good music, but I don’t think it’s a landmark album in Alt-J’s career. I see it as a stepping stone to a new sound for the band, and I’m already anticipating their next album.

SSAT Practice Essay Topics

SSAT Practice Essay TopicsAre you taking the SSAT or want to take the SSAT and need a practice essay topics? In my personal opinion, there are two factors to remember. First is the importance of personal reflection as we all know it but more important is that it can be developed. One is when you read your essay to someone else you have to say yourself. You cannot go into a high stress situation and wait to find out what someone else has already written. You may as well get the ideas from reading. As much as possible use an in-book glossary and the tips on their practice essay topics will help you understand them.Second is the importance of writing down things you have observed about a topic or idea in an essay. This is a very good idea but one more thing. Do not look for any tips in an essay. Look to those people who actually wrote their own essays. This way, you will realize that reading is good but reviewing and practicing is even better. It is always good to ask and learn from other s.It can be a learning experience as well as fun because you can write down practice essay topics and look at what other people wrote about that topic. Most of the time, the best thing about reading is when you do not know what to write. You can see where they go wrong and correct them.Taking the SSAT or those exams is a lot of work. If you are new at this, I strongly suggest taking practice tests and essays. These help you with things you have to prepare for such as the type of questions that you will be asked and the format in which you must answer. At the end of the day, writing can help you understand what you want to write in an essay and this is what takes place while taking the SSAT or those exams. Reading is something you must also do. This is good because it helps you to develop your skill.

Maritime Applications for Machine Learning and Data Science

Maritime Applications for Machine Learning and Data Science    As data collection and analysis seeps into the conservative maritime industry we are beginning to see cracks in this grand old system based on tradition and trial and error. When I say old, I don’t mean the 1980’s or even the 1880’s. Opinions vary on the exact time shipping became modern as any sailor or longshoreman would recognize today. When the English and Dutch began standardizing shipping practices between their two countries to increase safety and profit the practices soon spread. This was happening in the late 1600’s and if you wanted to be part of the shipping economy you looked to the English, Dutch, and to a lesser extent, the Spanish. Today we can see another example of this technology clustering having a lasting effect on a growing industry. Starting in the 1960’s California became the place to be if you were a part of the new generation of electronics companies. Standards were set and the jargon and culture of Silicon Valley we have today is a direct result of this small but powerful geographic area. In addition to soft concepts like jargon, deep architectural standards like eight digit binary numbers were solidified. The same sorts of transactions and relationships were also true of shipping as it became a standardized business. Global shipping today represents many cultures and values and it must be responsive in the era of pervasive media and digital content, or it will be demonized and lose the minimal goodwill available to a largely invisible industry. Yet when they see a good idea, which is one that will save money, it is quickly adopted by the upper levels of management. Workers are sometimes resistant to change for fear of job loss. Both of these behaviors occurred when the intermodal shipping container was introduced in the 1950’s as a cost saving measure. Automation of ships and ports will be a much more difficult journey than the one fought by the proponents of the modular container in the early days. Job loss among longshoremen was real and the sealed container ended the common practice of pilfering some of the cargo. This was common, and still happens occasionally today, with some Masters sanctioning the activity. The fact was it took much less labor to load a ship with large boxes than it did individual sacks or grain or crates of equipment that varied in size and weight. Automated ships and ports will eliminate some jobs that are hazardous or dirty and most people will not miss this kind of work. Jobs that have a high value are a different story. A totally autonomous ship is in the future and that means less risk for deck hands while increasing profits substantially for ship owners. The savings are similar to autonomous car savings, less risk, less insurance costs, more efficient operation, better traffic management, and elimination of human error.    The elimination of human error on the operational level is important since most accidents happen because of failure due to poor design or human error in some aspect of vessel operation. Machine learning is giving us insights into the marine world we never had before, and some of the revelations are contrary to accepted beliefs. A good example of this is the Digital Deck product for commercial fishermen that was developed by the company Point 97. Digital tracking of fishery data collected by fishermen in their daily operation led to discoveries local regulators used to manage fish stocks and reduce the resources needed to search for illegal fishing activity. Automatic importing of data allows for near real-time insights not only for regulators, but also fishermen. Now a new class of data is emerging with the announcement from MIT that they have developed an algorithm that monitors wave data in order to predict rouge wave formation. Rouge wave are giant and often deadly waves that form in the open sea where two wave fields combine. Rouge waves are often in the form of a peak and not a long running wave like those produced by tsunami. This is a new class of data because it needs quick action to work. Automatic avoidance systems are not generally accepted and permission to change course could take minutes. Rouge waves form and do their damage quickly so the best use of this data is in an automatic system that will change course or turn to face the wave bow-on. This will make mariners uncomfortable but the alternative is worse. Classification societies, insurers, and regulators all stand in the way of more automation but like self-driving cars, they will be accepted because of greater convenience and cost savings. We have already reached a point where there is too much data for one human to absorb. All that data on the helm displays can be better managed by computers which already run many parts of a modern ship. The few sailors that do remain on ships of the future will likely be technicians with few hands on duties unless automated maintenance and repair systems fail.

Analysis of Yasmina Rezas Play God of Carnage

Analysis of Yasmina Reza's Play 'God of Carnage' Conflict and human nature when presented with it, are the predominant themes of Yasmina Rezas play God of Carnage.  Well-written and a display of fascinating character development, this play gives the audience an opportunity to witness the verbal battles of two families and their complex personalities. An Introduction to God of Carnage God of Carnage is written by Yasmina Reza, an award-winning playwright.   Rezas  other notable plays include Art  and Life x 3.  Author Christopher Hampton translated her play from French into English.  In 2011, it was made into a film  titled Carnage, directed by Roman Polanski. The plot of God of Carnage  begins with  an 11-year-old boy (Ferdinand) who strikes another boy (Bruno) with a stick, thereby knocking out two front teeth. The parents of each boy meet. What begins as a civil discussion ultimately devolves into a yelling match. Overall, the story is well-written and it is an interesting play that many people will enjoy. Some of the highlights for this reviewer include: Realistic dialogueBelievable charactersInsightful satireSubtle / vague ending Theater of Bickering Most people arent fans of ugly, angry, pointless arguments - at least not in real life. But, not surprisingly, these types of arguments are a theater staple, and with good reason. Obviously, the stationary nature of the stage means that most playwrights will generate a physically sedentary conflict that can be sustained in a single setting. Pointless bickering is perfect for such an occasion. Also, a tense argument reveals multiple layers of a character: emotional buttons are pressed and  boundaries are assaulted. For an audience member, there is a dark voyeuristic pleasure in watching the verbal battle which unfolds during Yasmina Rezas God of Carnage. We get to watch the characters unravel their dark sides, despite their diplomatic intentions. We get to behold adults who act like rude, petulant children. However, if we watch closely, we might see a bit of ourselves. The Setting The entire play takes place at the home of the Houllie family. Originally set in modern Paris, subsequent productions of God of Carnage  set the play in other urban locations such as London and New York. The Characters Although we spend a short time with these four characters (the play runs about 90 minutes with no breaks or scene changes), playwright Yasmina Reza creates each with a sprinkling of commendable traits and questionable moral codes. Veronique Houllie  (Veronica in American productions)Michel Houllie  (Michael in American productions)Annette ReilleAlain Reille  (Alan in American productions) Veronique Houllie At first, she seems like the most benevolent of the bunch. Instead of resorting to litigation regarding her son Brunos injury, she believes that they can all come to an agreement about how Ferdinand should make amends for his attack. Of the four principles, Veronique exhibits the strongest desire for harmony. She is even writing a book about the atrocities of Darfur. Her flaws lie in her overly judgmental nature. She wants to instill a sense of shame in Ferdinands parents (Alain and Annette Reille) hoping they will, in turn, instill a deep sense of regret in their son. About forty minutes into their encounter, Veronique decides that Alain and Annette are terrible parents and miserable people in general, yet throughout the play, she still attempts to maintain her crumbling facade of civility. Michel Houllie At first, Michel seems eager to create peace between the two boys and perhaps even bond with the Reilles. He offers them food and drink. He is quick to agree with the Reilles, even making light of the violence, commenting on how he was a leader of his own gang during his childhood (as was Alain). As the conversation progresses, Michel reveals his uncouth nature. He makes racial slurs about the Sudanese people whom his wife is writing about. He denounces child-raising as a wasteful, grueling experience. His most controversial action (which takes place before the play) has to do with his daughters pet hamster. Because of his fear of rodents, Michel released the hamster in the streets of Paris, even though the poor creature was terrified and clearly wanted to be kept at home. The rest of the adults are disturbed by his actions, and the play concludes with a phone call from his young daughter, crying over the loss of her pet. Annette Reille Ferdinands mother is constantly on the brink of a panic attack. In fact, she vomits twice during the course of the play (which must have been unpleasant for the actors each night). Like Veronique, she wants resolution and believes at first that communication can ameliorate the situation between the two boys. Unfortunately, the pressures of motherhood and household have eroded her self-confidence. Annette feels abandoned by her husband who is eternally preoccupied with work. Alain is glued to his cell phone throughout the play  until Annette finally loses control and drops the phone into a vase of tulips. Annette is the most physically destructive of the four characters. In additional to ruining her husbands new phone, she intentionally smashes the vase at the end of the play. (And her vomit incident spoils some of Veroniques books and magazines, but that was accidental.) Also, unlike her husband, she defends her childs violent actions by pointing out that Ferdinand was verbally provoked and out-numbered by the gang of boys. Alain Reille Alain might be the most stereotypical character of the group in that he is modeled after other slimy lawyers from countless other stories. He is the most openly rude because he frequently interrupts their meeting by talking on his cell phone.  His law firm represents a pharmaceutical company that is about to be sued because one of their new products causes dizziness and other negative symptoms. He claims that his son is a savage and doesnt see any point in trying to change him. He seems the most sexist of the two men, often implying that women have a host of limitations. On the other hand, Alain is in some ways the most honest of the characters. When Veronique and Annette claim that people must show compassion toward their fellow man, Alain becomes philosophical, wondering if anyone can truly care for others, implying that individuals will always act out of self-interest. Men vs. Women While much of the plays conflict is between the Houllies and the Reilles, a battle of the sexes is also interwoven throughout the storyline. Sometimes a female character makes a disparaging claim about her husband and the second female will chime in with her own critical anecdote. Likewise, the husbands will make snide comments about their family life, creating a bond (albeit a fragile one) between the males. Ultimately, each of the characters turns on the other so that by the plays end everyone seems emotionally isolated.

Interpersonal Conflict in Film Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Interpersonal Conflict in Film - Movie Review Example Farhad did not know anything about guns and so when the store owner asked him about the kind of ammunition he wanted, Farhad had an argument with Dorri. This made the owner impatient and he told Farhad: â€Å"Yo, Osama, plan the jihad on your own time, what do you want?† Because of this statement, Farhad reacted: â€Å"Are you making insult at me?† The store owner continued in insulting Farhad and he said: â€Å"Is that the closest you can come to English.† Farhad emphasized that he can speak English and that he has rights to buy a gun: â€Å"Yes, I speak English. I am an American citizen†¦I have rights to buy guns!† Then the store owner reminded Farhad about 9/11, which made Farhad angrier. The owner called the guard, which led Farhad outside the door, while Dorri was left inside the store to demand either their money back or that the owner give them the gun. The conflict was not handled effectively, because the store owner and Farhad both had negati ve stereotypes about each other, which they used to prejudge each other’s motives and actions. Stereotypes are â€Å"preconceived opinions† about someone that tend to be â€Å"negative and reflect prejudices, preconceived opinions of dislike, hostility, or unjust behavior† (Sole, 2011, section 7.2).

A Doll's House Play Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

A Doll's House Play - Essay Example It would also be discussed whether her decision to leave are justified or not. The Fisher girl costume that Nora wore in the play symbolizes the pretentious lifestyle that she was living as this was used to show that she was hiding under this costume. Italy as used in the play also symbolizes the false image that was portrayed by Nora. The macaroon that was eaten by Nora also showed Nora’s deceit to her husband. Nora was deceptive to her husband and she definitely hid her feelings from him and this was the symbolism of the Macaroon in the play. â€Å"Are you happy now? There - there - there - don't look like a frightened little dove - the whole thing's just sheer imagination. Now, you must rehearse your tarantella - with the tambourine. I'll go sit in the inner room and shut the doors, so you can make all the noise you like - I shan't hear a thing.† (Ibsen 190). The tarantella dance by Nora also suggests her unhappiness as a wife and a mother. This tarantella dance was used to show Nora’s struggle with life and her agitation with her husband. â€Å"Nora, darling, you're dancing as if your life depended on it!† (Ibsen 204). Evidence to show that Nora is unhappy with the life that she leads as a wife and mother was when she realized that she had been hiding under another person’s shadow and pretending to be what she was not. ... She was also not happy that, she had to secretly work in order to pay off her loan as it was illegal for a woman to procure a loan without the consent of her husband. These were signs that she was unhappy with the way she lived as a wife and a mother as she could no longer continue living like that. Nora was blackmailed by Krogstad and it was actually after this that readers would learn that she is unhappy. She then begins to consider her concept of freedom and decide within herself whether she was happy or not. It was at this point that the reader begins to discover that she was unhappy with the life she led as a wife to Torvald. Thus, it was clear that Nora was unhappy with the manner at which she had been made to cope with the orders and edicts of her husband. â€Å"Still it was tremendous fun sitting there working and earning money. It was almost like being a man.† (Ibsen 162) It was now clear that she wanted to break free from her familial obligations as she sought to pur sue her own ambitions. Nora made her decision to leave after coming to the sudden realization that she was living her father’s life. She discovered that her marriage was actually contracted in order to please her father and the dictates of the society. It was Nora’s realization of the truth about her life that influenced her decision to leave her husband; quit her marital status and abandon her children. She wanted to be independent and she was of the opinion that, being under a man that her heart was not right with would hinder her from really being the kind of independent woman she would have loved to be. â€Å"It's a sweet little bird, but it gets through a terrible amount of money. You wouldn't believe how much it costs a man when he's got a little song-bird like you!† (Ibsen

The Major Battles of the Civil War Essays -- Civil War History Histori

The Major Battles of the Civil War No other war seems to hold our focus like the Civil War. Scholars have chosen to make it their life's work, authors have written reams about it, and we all feel some kind of connection to the Civil War. This paper was created to highlight some of the major battles that took place during that conflict. Major battles usually marked a drastic change in the momentum from one side to the other or led to massive losses of troops. These battles and their results all played a huge part in the outcome of the war. One of the war’s first battles was the Battle of First Bull Run. Today's site of the Battle of First Bull Run is a tranquil pasture surrounded by trees and a split rail fence. Instead of the neigh of a horse, you'll hear, in the distance, the sound of passing cars. A community college has a campus nearby, couples enjoy the sunshine and a nice walk, and a few kites fly leisurely in the breeze held by the hands of children. It's nothing like July 21, 1861; it's quiet. Everyone in Washington and the surrounding area had heard talk of the troops gathering outside Manassas Junction, Virginia. Expectations ran high that the Union troops would quickly send their Confederate brothers running for the hills. Buggies of spectators traveled the thirty miles from Washington to see the battle. Picnic baskets were opened and folks prepared to watch the show. No one expected what they saw. This wasn't one of the biggest battles of the war, but it was the formal opening for both sides. Of the 32,500 Confederate soldiers, 1,982 of them became casualties, while the Union counted 2,896 casualties from 35,000 troops. Many thought this would quickly settle the dispute; all it did was prepare everyone for a long war and move the Federal government into action. Another major battle took place at Shiloh. Isn't it strange that a battle as bloody as the battle at Shiloh would begin on a Sunday morning and be named for a country church near the battlefield? Maybe the soldiers didn't even see the irony. Then again, maybe someone did. The Union soldiers weren't prepared for the charge of their Confederate brothers. Many of the Union troops were untrained and undisciplined, but as in so many battles of war, mundane events served to alter the future. General Albert S. Johnston, CSA, had given his commanding generals orders to attack ... ...uring the Peninsula Campaign in 1862. He impressed his commanding general, Major General George McClellan, and steadily made rank afterward. Meade commanded a division at Antietam and the V Corps at Chancellorsville. Lincoln chose Meade to replace Major General Joseph Hooker in June 1863, as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. Meade was criticized for not pursuing the Rebel forces after the battle, but that didn't shake Lincoln's faith in Meade. Meade held command of the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war and became the most successful and longest serving Union commander. There were many battles that followed the battle of Gettysburg. Some were more important than others, but all played a part in the outcome of the war. The victories by the Union at Petersburg and Richmond led General Robert E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox. This effectively brought the most horrifying war in American History to an end. Many American soldiers died but not in vein. They fought for our country and to help hold it together. These battles and many more just show us how horrible war was, but without these battles America wouldn’t be what it is today, a unified and free country.

Of Mice and Men †Character study of Slim Essay

Of Mice and Men is set in California during the 1930s. This is an important time in US history because it was the time of the Great Depression, which did not end until the start of the Second World War. During this period of failed businesses, harsh poverty and long-term unemployment, many migrant workers came to California from other parts of America in search of work. The ranch workers in the book are all examples of people who have been affected by the Great Depression, as most of them are itinerant worker. One of them being Slim, who I am to be analysing from the book, to see what contribution and importance he makes in this Novel. Slim is described as a highly skilled mule driver and the acknowledged â€Å"prince† of the ranch. Steinbeck describes Slim in much greater detail than any other character, which indicates to us that he is a very important character in the novella. The description is also very unusual because the story just stops for a while as Slim is being described over two pages. He’s the only character who seems to be at peace with himself. Steinbeck also describes him as something of a living legend â€Å"he moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsmen†. There was gravity in his manner and a quiet yet so profound, that all talk stopped when he spoke, as I he had mystical powers. His hatchet face was ageless. Slim is not only respected for his skill as a ranch hand as they say ‘he could kill fly on the wheelers butt with a bull whip without touching the mule’ but he is also seen as a man who thinks things through especially before speaking when it says ‘his ear heard more†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ His ear heard more than was said to him, and his slow speech had overtones not of thought, but of understanding beyond thought. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love. Slim lingers in the shadow of his overwhelming description throughout the novel. He serves as the fearless, decision-maker when conflicts arise among the workers and wins the confidence of George, offering advice, comfort, and quiet words of wisdom. Steinbeck from the start makes Slim above the other men and this is continuous throughout the whole novel till the end of the story. Slim’s presence is first noted in the bunkhouse. Even though it is here that he is introduced in a proper manner, we are already aware of the fact that he is an agreeable and pleasant man through certain statements made by other characters previously. For example, Candy states that Slim is a â€Å"Hell of a nice fella†. Furthermore, we learn that he is a likable and attractive man on account of Curley’s wife, â€Å"Hi, Good-lookin'†. Steinbeck’s use of biblical light imagery immediately emphasizes the fact that Slim’s character signals a sense of hope and a way out of the darkness. For example, as the text states, â€Å"Slim reached up over the card-table and turned on the tin-shaded electric light. Instantly the table was bright with light, and the cone of the shade threw its brightness straight downward, leaving the corners of the bunkhouse still in dusk.† I think not only the description implies to the light and hope of Slim’ s character, but also the importance of Slim’s presence, as the light is the brightest at where Slim is, and darker as it gets further away from Slim. I think there is an underlying hint of Slim’s status as the â€Å"core† on the ranch. One of the most distinctive contributions Slim brings is when George confides in him about how he and Lennie travel round together. Slim is clever in the way he brings this topic up as he says ‘†funny how you an’ him string along together†. But he says it calmly and invitingly to George, also the tone Slim uses offers confidence to George to talk. Slim does not prey or resort to bullying tactics when extracting information about George’s past, rather he exudes a â€Å"calm invitation to confidence†. The effect of this is that George appears to feel comfortable and at ease, and he is able to expand his relationship with Lennie. George does not appear to hold back when describing the close and loving relationship he shares with Lennie. For example, George states, â€Å"Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. When Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin’. Got kinda used to each other after a little wh ile†. . When George and Lennie arrive together at the bunkhouse people think it is strange for men to travel together. This shows that society is use to people travelling alone. So through Slim, Steinbeck uses him as a way of criticising society. With all of Slim’s God-like features it is hard for us to understand why he is there at the ranch until this scene as it opens up the story a little bit more. Slim’s calm and gentle presence allows George to reveal these intimate personal details about his shared history with Lennie. George also mentions the incident that took place at Weed and this shows how much integrity Slim has and how he now acquired Georges respect. It is as George’s voice takes on the tone of a confessor. The fact that George feels he is able to reveal these details to Slim allows the plot to appear more realistic. English Coursework Of Mice and Men The character of Slim, unlike the others doesn’t have any real ambition; he has nowhere to go and no American Dream. I think that Slim even with his wisdom and perfect like characteristics still, has nothing to call his own and will, by every indication, remain a migrant worker until his death. Slim differs from the others in the fact that he does not seem to want something outside of what he has, he is not fooled by a dream, and he has not laid any plans like the others. I personally think that Slim still has ideas and a dream inside but one that he has control over unlike the others. Slim just seems to have somehow reached the sad conclusion that dreams rarely work in a world full of obstacles. Slim is a contrast to Curley. Slim only uses his strength when it is necessary whereas Curley’s uses his openly. For example when Curley attacks Lennie for thinking that he is laughing at him, Slim wants to end the fight but George stops him. Slim only decides to jump in after Lennie attacks Curley. Afterwards Slim shows his cleverness when he thinks of a plan to keep George and Lennie on the ranch. When Lennie breaks Curley’s hand George says to Slim, â€Å"Slim, will we get canned now?’†¦Slim smiled†. George and the reader think that George and Lennie will be sacked but Slim makes a massive impression on the readers in this scene as he thinks of an intelligent plan. He says to Curley, â€Å"I think you got your hand caught in a machine.† Otherwise Slim would have told the truth and Curley’s would lose his pride. Slim’s plan is important because I think that nobody else would have thought of it as they all stood in shock. Both of the characters use their authority differently. Curley has authority because he is the boss’s son, while Slim has the friendship of all around him. Curley’s uses his power to bully people but Slim has on certain occasions used his against Curley. This happens when Curley pesters Slim about where his wife is. Slim says, â€Å"you lay offa me.† And Curley reply is, â€Å"I didn’t mean nothing†¦I jus’ thought you might of saw her.† Curley is threatened by Slim because he does not know what Slim is capable of. Whit said, â€Å"Nobody knows what Slim can do.† This shows that Slim has never lost his temper to the extent that it would end up in a brawl. This is an example of the wonderful power Slim possess in the ranch. Slim is quite unlike any other character in the novel. I feel that Steinbeck uses Slim to show the extent of the Great Depression. Slim comes across as being civilized and educated but as I have said earlier Slim is only a jerk line skinner and nothing more. We also get the impression that he will become nothing more. This shows that even characters of Slim’s status could not find work. Through out the book it is made to sound that Slim is the hero where infact it is more so the case that he is not the hero everyone else is just a failure.
